Requirements for Accessing an Old-Age Pension through Colpensiones
An old-age pension (pensión de vejez) is one of the most important rights under the Colombian social security system. Yet many workers face unjustified denials or delays from Colpensiones (Colombia's public pension administrator). Understanding the requirements is the first step toward asserting your rights.
Requirements under the Pay-As-You-Go Regime (Régimen de Prima Media – Colpensiones)
To qualify for a pension through Colpensiones in 2025, you must meet two conditions simultaneously:
- Age: 62 years for men / 57 years for women
- Contribution weeks: a minimum of 1,300 weeks (approximately 25 years of work)
What Is the Transitional Regime?
The transitional regime (régimen de transición) protects workers who, as of April 1, 1994, were at least 35 years old (women) or at least 40 years old (men), or had already contributed for 15 years. These workers are entitled to retire under the prior rules (Law 33 of 1985 or the applicable special regimes), which are generally more favorable.
When Colpensiones Denies a Pension Claim
The most common grounds for denial are:
- Missing contribution weeks due to employers who failed to report correctly
- Weeks held in private pension funds that were never transferred
- Errors in the employment history records
- Failure to recognize entitlement under the transitional regime
Steps to Take If Your Claim Is Denied
- Request the denial decision (resolución de negativa) in writing
- File a reconsideration appeal (recurso de reposición) within the following 10 business days
- If the appeal is unsuccessful, bring a claim before the labor court (juez laboral)
- Review your contribution history on the Colpensiones website and report any inconsistencies
How Long Can the Process Take?
- Initial application: 4 to 6 months
- Reconsideration appeal: an additional 2 months
- Court proceedings: 1 to 2 years
